As a child, I was diagnosed with particularly extreme asthma. Before I had any knowledge of the actual origins of my symptoms, I felt that they were owed to some sort of parasitizing entity - ‘ghosts’ or otherwise - setting up residency in my throat, where the wheezing sounds I made were their attempt to somehow still have some communication with the wider world. With a whole pharmacopeia of medicines only managing to keep them silent part of the time, the next couple of decades would be spent trying to ‘banish’ them with whatever control techniques I personally improvised. In fact, as a 'grown up,' re-imagining asthmatic flare-ups as the work of malignant entities somehow worked as a technique in and of itself, ‘raising the stakes’ involved in the control of my respiration.

The main source materials for these tracks are recordings of my asthmatic breath (made in Tokyo, 2005, the last instance in which I needed hospitalization for this condition) paired with Michael’s EVP recordings from medical sites. Melting the two together was a way of subsuming my personal experiences with poor health into the larger history of disease - maybe an attempt to give these “ghosts” a final resting place along with the lingering phantasms bred by other forms of illness. That these pieces were composed during the forced quarantine of 2020 is another act of coming “full circle” and completing an act of banishment via creativity: my asthma-afflicted childhood had its own periods of self-imposed “lockdown” in which contact with the external world was drastically limited (not just contact with allergens, but also reflexive natural acts like laughter could be the trigger for another trip to the emergency room). The period of exhilarating freedom that followed this time is still very much with me: the restless desire to expand and diversify my experience, and my whole development as a creative individual, all owes itself somehow to the ghosts that once sang their mocking atonal song within my compromised airways. My hope is that those who emerge from the current planetary plague will have a chance to experience the same type of personal reintegration with creative life.
